Our response to any given situation in life are based on our value system . Our values are our belief system about what is right and wrong , or good and bad. If we can accept anything corrupt including the rape of our nation , then we have to blame our value system . Today if NATIONALISM or PATRIOTISM does not figure in our values , nor does HONESTY AND INTEGRITY , then we can accept the current the current state of affairs within the country without being pinched in the conscience . Otherwise we must act OR we would have acted already .
Times change, values change in society . Today MASS MEDIA have the maximum capability in directing and creating values and behaviour of the masses. The misuse of media and the absence of “true journalism” in India bears responsibility to a great extent to the loss of values in Indian society . The vulgar display of riches and the glamorous lifestyle of the ultra rich picturised daily on our newspapers and on TV screens is driving the vaulting ambition among the middle class to become insta-rich by any means. The mass media which are aware of their reach and influence present a picture larger than life, shirking their responsibility to provide their audience a broad sociological, psychological and truthful understanding of all issues.
The media joining hands with corporates and politicians is perhaps the last nail in the coffin for India . The fact that political parties and corporates wish to own the media , is itself evident of vested interests and not everything being right regarding usage of the media . Now moral degeneration is evident in the entire social fabric of India and values are at a shocking discount . A frenzy of greed and ambition has been unleashed never before seen in indian history and defying all values and ethics that indian society was known for .Today it has reached a point wherein the Indian state or the corrupt people that the 'system' permits to run India and every institution in India today , are actually destroying the "Indian psyche " and moulding a society against its will into a divisive , greedy ,unethical , hobbesian society where man-eats-man and "sab kuch chaltha hai ".
.
.
A new-age Mahatma Gandhi appearing on the scene to stem the rot seems a very remote possibility . But are there no other voices in society or are the voices being smothered down by a media with only vested interests? Unless the Indian media realises its responsibility over and above commercial profiteering ; unless there are concerned voices in the Indian society ; unless the common man realises that his contribution to the Indian society is also mandatory for his well being in the long run , dark days are ahead indeed for INDIA and INDIANS.
It’s high time we stopped blindly celebrating a “India success story” that is not real and paid attention to actualy what’s happening to people’s lives , ........to our own lives , our society and our country in general .
In order to truly change , grow and prosper , we Indians need to become consciously aware of the rules we have for ourselves and others , of how we really measure or judge our sucess or failure .Otherwise we can have everything and still feel like nothing . And in the midst of al the material progress we will all be fighting for psychological survival . This is the power of the critical element called VALUES .
Community leaders, intellectuals ,celebrities , Journalists( true ones!), academics, teachers , researchers , must be continuously active in pushing the society and govt to take action . There is need to give more emphasis to values-education in schools ; educate the public through discussions , media campaigns , class room lectures , religious sermons etc to get wide support for this national cause . The threat is really serious and must be taken as such . Even a laymen is able to envisage the coming disaster for the nation quite well, let alone a visionary intellectual.
