The tens of thousands of hectares of public land and land that belonged to the poor have been given away to corporations for commercialisation in the guise of development ! In the name of development , i.e construction of highways, airports , dams , mining areas , creation of Special Economic Zones and so on, land has been taken away at prices that are less than 10 per cent of the value of those tracts of land and gifted to corporates , while depriving the poor of their livelihoods . The gifting away of Defence land , railway land , forest land and other forms of state owned land to societies under benami names is also being done again for a pittance , over the past 10-15 years . Land scams may be the biggest loot of state property or of India since Independence . There are hundreds of such Adarsh and Ashirwad scams waiting to be unearthed across the country . It is becoming more and more evident now to the hapless poeple of India , that our so called political 'leaders'-MPs and MLAs today – not all , but a vast majority , who come to occupy seats of power using illicit electoral means and our flawed Indian electoral system have been abusing their oath of office and working only to enrich themselves- all in the name of 'development '.
Those with money and power continue to buy and sell every land they seek ,using the name of development & even by manipulating or fudging documents in revenue departments . Such audacious and blatant misuse of authority for personal enrichmnet , is because India does not have an investigative and legal system in place even today to punish the guilty -specially the powerful or confiscate their ill-gotten wealth . India's criminal justice system is lax, and most get away scot free, laughing all the way upto their banks, literally even for murder. For a select few convicted by a court of law, neither their ill gotten wealth is confiscated nor their journey from home to prison made an ordeal long enough to remember ,because someone within the system sooner than later inevitably bails them out .And these so called ‘leaders’ will never allow to table or pass any strong legislation today that will stop thier free run or identify /punish the guilty amongst them . The national plunder in the name of development continues while the vast majority lose their land & livelihood resources .
The British looted India for 300 years , but our so called “leaders” after independenc have looted 3000 times more in just 65 years .So where can the aam-aadmi go to address this malady and stop this looting of his Motherland - India ? Citizens must resolve to unite and revolt against this system and bring about change . There is no other alternative . Anna Hazare and his JANLOKPAL bill is a viable though not a 100% solution . It must and can become a reality only through the activism of the public- & not by depending on the parliamentarians or legislators to act . Serious electoral reform must follow to ensure a better breed of politicians get elected to seats of power, who are primarily driven by the concern for public welfare and national interests .
But for all this to happen , a socially active & politicaly engaged public with a responsible media is a must . Can all patriotic Indians and media put their act together and churn the Indian society to bring abut this change ?
