WHAT GROWTH IS THE GOVT TRUMPETTING ABOUT ?

In a period of much TRUMPETED  rapid GDP expansion, under this   Govt , there is no growth in jobs  (employment generation actually decreased sharply between 2004-05 and 2009-10-ref India’ statistical survey July09-Jun10) s and there is 'despair driven exodus' from rural areas ( ref-latest  Census report) ! Then whom is the 8-10 %  annual GDP growth really benefitting ?

Those in the Govt, the  most !(Even based on self declared  stats , the average asset worth of a union minister rose from Rs.7.3 crore to Rs.10.6 crore in 28 months-  i.e adding a modest million a month on average through 28 months.Ref the article "Indian cabinet gets healthier " ).Then  to the Corporates and finally the crumbs being thrown at the Indian middle class to keep them contented and more important elated over an apparent growth story .
The same decade or let us say past 7-8 years , also has seen a period of mind boggling corruption & sell-off of the national resources  like spectrum , gas ,  ore etc and  undermining of democratic institutions like even  the office of the CVC , all under a democratically elected Govt  led by a  Economist PM , that came to power claiming -and still claims, as  “working for the poor”.   But even after 65 years of Independence of which 60 years were under the Congress , majority Indians are still kept deprived and desperate.  While towns and cities get over-crowded,  most Indians still struggle to obtain basic public services that wealthier , more secure countries take for granted . The Planning Commission in Sept 2011, redefined “below the poverty line “ for Indians to below Sub- Sahara African levels  to artificailly suppress the growing number of poor in the country !! The Planning Commission under this Govt told the Supreme Court on 20Sept 2011,  that anyone spending more than Rs 965 ($21) per month in urban India and Rs 781($17 per month ) in rural India will be deemed not to be poor. Mind you these figures are being put forward by those earning  not less than a million rupees  a month . Meanwhile the total slum population of the country, which was 7.52 crore in 2001, has grown by 24%  to 9.3 crore in 2011 (the NSSO-National Sample Survey Organisation report ). But the Govt , joining hands wth the media ,claims "India is rising", with deception at the heart of this well orchestrated publicity campaign that is aimed at  hiding   the truth  . The only major growth achieved  was in the number of scams , private-jets  & top end cars  sold in the country  to the neo-rich thriving on rampant corruption and most notably the   Illegal outflows from the country to tax havens that grew exponentially .In just five years from 2004-08 alone, the country lost roughly Rs.4.3 lakh crores ( Rs 4300,000,000,000 or 86Bn USD )to such outflows (ref GFI report).  Yes India breeds poor people, so that the rich  get richer  . For 300 years we were colonised and looted by the British , but in the past  60 years we have more than been colonised- by our own brethren who have not only looted more that what the British did in 300 years but also  done irreparable damage to the nations' environment & fragile eco-system

Truly the GDP growth being trumpeted by this Govt is not in the nations long term intertest , but  a coverup for the brazen loot of the nation & destruction of its environment . I would request journalists like Sainath  and similiar well meaning journalists in the country  to make it feasible for  such headlines  to appear in the media :   “WHAT GROWTH IS INDIA TALKING ABOUT AND WHO BENEFITS FROM THIS KIND OF GDP GROWTH ?”, so that it becomes a topic of national debate soon .
